Record Number of Scholarships Awarded
The NNALEA has awarded nine scholarships to outstanding college students. In addition to the record number awarded, a record number of applications for these scholarships was also received.
The NNALEA congratulates the recipients of these awards:
Jayne W. Blacker - University of Illinois at Chicago
Christina Dick - Haskell Indian Nations University
Megan LaFromboise - Haskell Indian Nations University
Althea Tapahonso-Eaton - Haskell Indian Nations University
Peter E. Smith, Jr. - University of Massachusetts
Adrienne Lynn Smith - University of Arkansas
Desiree Morton - Northeastern State University
Kara M. Muskrat - Northeastern State University
Tyrone M. Simmons - Haskell Indian Nations University
Each student received a $500 check just prior to the New Year, with hopes of providing some contribution to their educational related expenses. More importantly, the association pledged their support and commitment to the future of Native America. Students were selected based on the review of required essays and applications that included their intent to give back to the "community" and their current Grade Point Average.Once again the growing success of the association and the recent annual conference in Palm Springs, Calif. provided the means through which the Scholarship Program was resurrected. The NNALEA Executive Board awarded two of the scholarships. Through our new partnership and the on-going support of the Indian Motorcycle Company, their scholarship contribution enabled five awards to be presented. Another private grant received from NNALEA supported Kirk Mitchell enabled two additional scholarships.
Congratulations to all the recipients. One day let's hope they might be carrying badges!
