The President's Corner
The week of May 15 was designated as Police Memorial Week for those officers who died in the line of duty. On May 15 all the flags of the United States were flown at half-staff commemorating Peace Officers Memorial Day. This is a richly deserved tribute to the more than 14,000 law enforcement officers who have died serving their communities.
The Indian Country Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Service was held on May 6, 1999 at 10 a.m. at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center-Indian Police Academy, Artesia, New Mexico.
Unfortunately three names were added to the Indian Country Law Enforcement Memorial this year who paid the ultimate price, bringing the total of 74 names inscribed to date on the Memorial. They are Officer Michael Delgado, Tohono O'Odham Nation Police Department, Arizona, died April 9, 1998. Officer Delgado was on his way to pick up a department vehicle when the vehicle he riding in was struck by a speeding vehicle that had ran a red light.
Captain Jack Spencer, BIA Western Nevada Agency, Nevada, died September 5, 1998. Captain Spencer was on duty responding to an all night gun call. After being awake for many hours, he started the long drive home. He struck the back end of a semi-truck and was killed.
Officer Defford Oyebi, Otoe-Missouri Tribal Police, Oklahoma, died December 20, 1998. Officer Oyebi was on duty responding to a report of an overturned vehicle. He lost control of his vehicle due to icy road conditions and died as a result of a traffic accident.
Our hearts and prayers are extended to the families of our fallen Warriors, they answered the call and gave their all for all of us.
