Oklahoma Chapter News

On April 9, Chapter President Ron Teel, Chief of Police, Osage Nation Tribal Police Department set the chapter's meeting dates for the rest of the year.  The meetings are scheduled to convene at 3 p.m. on June 11, Sept. 17 and Dec. 10.  The June 11 meeting was held in Tulsa, Okla. at the Tulsa County Sheriff's Office, 800 E. 1st Street.  Meetings will alternate between Tulsa and Oklahoma City.

The Chapter congratulates former Vice-President Randy Pierce, Deputy Sheriff for the Tulsa County Sheriff's Office for his June 7 return to work.  On May 1, 1998, Randy was serving a mental health pick-up warrant in Tulsa along with his partner, Deputy Garland Thompson, ONALEA member, when the subject opened fire with a .45 caliber weapon.  Deputy Pierce was shot twice in the chest and once in the left elbow and right forearm.  He credits his survival to his 5-year-old daughter, Taylor, who brought him his bullet proof vest to wear when she realized her father was leaving for work and did not have on his vest.  Encouraged by Taylor, Deputy Pierce put on his vest.

As a result of their actions that day, both Garland and Randy have received numerous honors and awards.  Garland was named Deputy of the Year for 1999 and Randy received the Officer of the Year award for 1999.  The National Chiefs of Police Association awarded Randy, Garland, and Taylor the highest law enforcement award, the Knights of Justice Award in May.
