ICLES Conference Recap

The annual meeting for the Indian Country Law Enforcement Section (ICLES) of the International Association of the Chiefs of Police (IACP) was held in Charlotte, North Carolina on October 31, 1999 as a part of the IACP's annual conference.

In addition to the general business of the section, the meeting included presentations of various initiatives designed to improve law enforcement efforts in Indian Country.  Guest speakers from DOJ, NHTSA, and the COPS office reported on funding issues, training opportunities, and special projects targeting specific law enforcement needs.

One of the prime focuses of the meeting was the implementation of the summit to deal with the increase in crime in Indian Country.  The ICLES is beginning the process to have IACP sponsor the summit, which will address the many problems that hamper the effective law enforcement in Indian Country.

In addition to identifying problems, the summit will attempt to develop strategies, seek resources, and discuss alternatives to traditional policing that encompass the traditions and culture of the Native American communities that are served.  As the proposed summit takes shape, the section Chairman, Edward Reina, Chief of Police of the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony, will be seeking the assistance and participation of all groups that work to better serve Native American communities.

If you'd like additional information about the meeting or the section, please contact Elizabeth McKenna, staff liason for the section, at 1-800-THE-IACP, ext. 316 or Edward Reina, Section Chairman at 775-785-8776.
